Dear Colleagues,
It is with profound sadness that I learned of the passing of Maria Cristina Vannini on Sunday, 11 October 2026. A devoted and deeply respected member of the international museum community, Cristina dedicated her life to advancing the mission of museums. Through her leadership as Chair of INTERCOM and her many years of service to ICOM and the wider cultural heritage field, she demonstrated an unwavering commitment to dialogue, collaboration, and the values that unite our global community.
Over the years, Cristina developed friendships across countries, cultures, and generations. Through countless meetings, conferences, projects, and shared experiences, she brought people together with generosity, warmth, and a genuine spirit of friendship. Many who first came to know Cristina as a colleague soon came to value her as a trusted and cherished friend.
Cristina leaves behind a remarkable legacy of leadership, cultural engagement, and service. She will be remembered not only for her professional accomplishments, but also for the relationships she nurtured, the kindness she extended to others, and the sense of community she inspired wherever she went. Her passing is a profound loss for ICOM, for INTERCOM, for ICOM Italy, and for the museum world.
On behalf of the Executive Board, the Secretariat, and the entire ICOM global community, I extend our deepest condolences to Cristina’s family, friends, and colleagues. Our thoughts are with everyone mourning her loss. We also convey our heartfelt sympathy to all those who worked closely with Cristina and shared in her remarkable personal and professional journey. Please know that the ICOM community stands with you and remains ready to offer any support we can during this difficult time.
We will honor Cristina’s life, dedication, and service to ICOM during the next meeting of the Advisory Council on November 16th. Her memory, friendship, and remarkable legacy will continue to inspire us.
With deepest sympathy,
Antonio Rodríguez
